Why This Matters to Me

Why This Matters to Me

I've always believed that beautiful things become even more beautiful when you know their story.

A handmade mug becomes someone's first leap into entrepreneurship.

A sweater becomes years of careful craftsmanship.

A neighbourhood shop becomes the people who unlock the doors every morning, hoping someone wanders in.

That's the kind of curiosity that built The Curious Gift Co.

Lately, it's become something even bigger.

When I started this business, I thought I was creating a place to share beautiful things. And in many ways, I was.

But somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn't just drawn to the products. I was drawn to the people behind them.

I wanted to know who started the company.

Whether it was still family-owned.

If it was Canadian.

What values shaped the decisions they made.

How they treated their employees.

Whether they cared about the communities they were part of.

Not because I expected perfection.

But because I found myself wanting to support businesses whose stories felt as thoughtful as the things they created.

I've spent more than twenty years working in communications, and one lesson has stayed with me through every role I've had.

People connect with stories.

They're how we make sense of the world. They're how we decide who to trust. They're what we remember long after we've forgotten the facts.

Businesses have stories too.

Sometimes they're stories of families who've been quietly building something for generations.

Sometimes they're stories of women who saw a gap and decided to create what didn't exist.

Sometimes they're stories of a tiny Canadian company making extraordinary things from a workshop most of us will never visit.

Those are the stories I find myself coming back to.

Not because they're perfect.

But because they're human.

The more I researched the brands we carry, the more I found myself researching brands we don't. One question would lead to another, and before long I'd have learned about a company in Nova Scotia, an independent retailer in Quebec, or a British clothing brand with a fascinating history.

I realized I couldn't be the only person who found this interesting.

So I created The Curious Guide.

It's not here to tell you what to buy.

It's not a scorecard.

And it certainly isn't about finding perfect companies.

It's simply a place to ask thoughtful questions, celebrate businesses doing good work, and share the stories that don't fit on a product tag.

Some of the companies you'll read about are carried here at The Curious Gift Co.

Many won't be.

Because this isn't really about what we sell.

It's about building a community of people who believe that curiosity is worth making room for.

That if we're going to fill our homes, our closets, and our lives with things, it's nice to know a little about the people who made them.

Maybe you'll discover a new Canadian company.

Maybe you'll find your next favourite independent shop.

Maybe you'll simply leave with a good story to tell over coffee.

If that happens, I'll consider The Curious Guide a success.

One Last Curious Thing...

I'd love for this to be shaped by your curiosity as much as mine.

Is there a company you've always wondered about? A Canadian brand you think deserves more attention? A small business that's quietly doing remarkable things?

Send me a note.

There's a good chance it'll become the next rabbit hole I happily disappear into.
