The Sweatshirt That Started It All: Why I've Admired Copious Fashions for Years
Share
I've had Copious Fashions bookmarked for years.
Long before I owned a gift shop. Long before The Thoughtful Shopper. Every so often, I'd wander back to see what Carissa McCaig was designing next.
It was always the heart sweatshirts.
Beautifully simple. A classic sweatshirt with a heart appliqué made from reclaimed textiles. The kind of design that catches your eye first, then quietly reminds you that caring for the planet doesn't have to come at the expense of beautiful things.
I remember thinking, that's exactly the kind of brand I want to champion.
The more I've learned about Carissa and the philosophy behind Copious, the more that first impression has held true. She isn't just designing clothing. She's reimagining what clothing can be, finding beauty in materials that already exist and proving that thoughtful design and sustainability belong together.
Looking back, I think Copious was one of the first brands that changed how I thought about sustainability.
Not because it asked me to buy less, or because it wrapped itself in lofty messaging. Quite the opposite. It simply made beautiful clothing. Sustainability wasn't the headline, it was woven into the process.
That approach has stayed with me.
I've always loved things with a previous chapter. Dog-eared books. Antique furniture. Vintage quilts. Pieces that carry a little history before they find their way to you. Upcycled fashion feels like an extension of that same idea. Rather than seeing worn denim or discarded textiles as waste, Carissa sees possibility.
There's something deeply hopeful about that.
Running The Curious Gift Co. has only deepened my appreciation for brands like Copious. I know firsthand how many decisions happen long before a product ever reaches a customer. Choosing better materials. Manufacturing thoughtfully. Growing at a pace that reflects your values instead of the latest trend.
Those choices aren't always the easiest ones.
They're often the ones that matter most.
One of the things I hope The Thoughtful Shopper becomes is a place to celebrate brands that are building something with intention. Brands where you can feel the owner's values in the finished product. Brands that make you pause before clicking "add to cart" somewhere else.
Copious has always been one of those brands for me.
It started with a sweatshirt.
But I think what I've really admired all these years is Carissa's ability to see beauty where the rest of us might only see leftovers. To prove that thoughtful design and sustainability aren't competing ideas, they're partners.
And perhaps that's why her work still feels just as fresh today as it did the first time I stumbled across it.
Some brands sell clothes.
The very best ones quietly reshape the way we think about what we're wearing.
