What Makes a Brand Worth Coming Back To
Partager
When I wrote about becoming more intentional with where I shop, a few people asked the obvious next question.
“So… where do you shop?”
The truth is, I don’t believe any brand is perfect.
Ownership changes. Manufacturing evolves. Companies make decisions I wouldn’t always make myself.
But there are still brands I come back to. Not because they’re flawless, but because they’ve earned a place in my closet, on my shelves or in my everyday life.
They make things that last. They know who they are. And perhaps most importantly, they make me feel like someone cared while creating them.
Here are a few of mine.
Simons
If you’ve ever wandered through Simons, you probably know the feeling.
It doesn’t feel like every other department store.
There’s a confidence to it. European in spirit, unmistakably Canadian in heart. They take risks with colour, texture and design without losing practicality. Whether I’m buying a linen dress, a beautiful candle or simply wandering for inspiration, I always leave feeling like good design matters.
Pokoloko
I’ve reached a point in life where I buy fewer things, but I ask more of them.
I want fabrics that breathe. Clothes that move with me instead of against me. Pieces that feel just as right on a walk by the lake as they do at a networking event or client meeting.
That’s why I keep coming back to Pokoloko.
There’s a quiet confidence to what they make. Nothing feels like it’s trying too hard. Just beautiful natural fibres, relaxed shapes and an ease that has become increasingly important to me.
Because somewhere along the way I realized that comfortable doesn’t have to mean giving up beautiful.
Reitmans
I think Reitmans deserves a little credit.
Over the past several years, they’ve worked incredibly hard to elevate their collections. Better fabrics. Better styling. More thoughtful photography. More confidence.
It’s proof that brands can evolve, and I admire businesses willing to put in that kind of work instead of relying on who they used to be.
Roots
Roots is a bit more complicated for me.
Its ownership isn’t as Canadian as many people assume anymore, but when I think about Canadian style, it’s still hard not to picture those familiar sweats, leather bags and weekends at the cottage.
Some brands become part of our collective story, even as the business behind them changes.
And honestly? Few companies understand comfort quite like Roots.
tentree
I carry tentree in the shop for a reason.
They’ve built a brand around thoughtful design and environmental responsibility without making either one feel like the headline. Their clothes are beautifully made, wonderfully comfortable and easy to wear.
They’re the kind of basics that quietly become favourites, which, if you ask me, is exactly what good design should do.
A few local favourites
Some of my favourite purchases haven’t come from big brands at all.
They’ve come from small shops, local artists and independent makers who know every customer by name. Places where someone has carefully chosen every item because they genuinely believe it’s worth bringing into the world.
Those are the businesses that remind me shopping has always been about more than transactions.
It’s about people.
Communities.
Conversations.
And it’s about filling our homes with things that have earned their place there.
That’s the kind of business I’m trying to build, too.
Not because I’ll always get it right.
But because I believe the things we surround ourselves with should make life just a little more beautiful.
I’d love to know…
